   The Batumi Architecture Summer School 2011 is a 12 days architecture summer school arranged by The Technical University of Georgia in cooperation with other universities and supporter organizations.

   The Aim of The Summer School is to stimulate Interdisciplinarity approach to the issues regarded to the development of historical and modern parts of a coastal city with emphasis on climate factors and natural environment. This specialized course will promote contacts and further collaboration between young professionals from different countries, schools and organisations. Lectures delivered by experts in the field together with studio work will help participants to understand the theory and apply their knowledge to practice.

   The Summer School studio work will be divided into two sections: Architecture and Urban Design. However students of both sections will attend all lectures delivered during The BIASS.

   Students will work in international groups. They will survey existing buildings and working site, make its ecological, architectural and constructional analysis. According to obtained knowledge, participants will work out concepts for their group projects.

   The results will be assessed and exhibited in the end of each section. All materials will be given to Batumi City hall. The working materials including presentations of theoretical lectures will be shared with all interested organization and architectural schools. 

   At the end of the program all participants will be awarded Certificates of Attendance. 

BATUMI. GEORGIA

   Batumi is the administrative centre of the autonomous republic of Adjara and has a population of approximately 130.000 inhabitants. It is one of the most important tourists sites along the Georgian Black Sea coast attracting a growing number of national and international tourists. At this moment a new infrastructure is built along the coastline in Batumi and the construction of a large number of new hotels and resort facilities has been planned. However, Batumi has historical districts as well, which are rapidly developed and many old buildings were partly transformed for modern use and now have new functions. 

   Considering world cities experience climate factors became one of the most important components of a coastal city development. Summer school participants are invited to contribute in the developing design concepts for future development of Batumi districts or its infrastructure and answer questions like: How can seismic safety, ecology and leisure be mixed in touristic parts of Batumi? What kinds of new strategies and technologies can be used for coastal protection of area while developing tourism and water leisure? What kind of architectural and structural issues, and spaces and elements that provide opportunity for visual expression of seismic architecture?
